This is another book I was sent from the publisher recently. It's called 1,000 Gluten-Free Recipes, and it's by Carol Fenster. The book has had great reviews, from what I've seen.
Now, I am fortunate in that I have no problem with gluten in anything I eat, and neither do my husband or my kids. I have no desire to eliminate gluten from my diet, either. In fact, I heartily embrace gluten in my bread-baking endeavors.
But I know there is definitely a huge market for cookbooks like this, so I offer it to all of you out there who would really benefit from its recipes.
So, let's see about the guidelines....
If you would like a shot at winning this book, you'll need to leave a comment to this post.
Your comment should be about...........Halloween costumes. If you or your kid(s) or nieces and/or nephews are going trick or treating, what will you/they be dressed as? Or, what is the best costume or worst costume you've ever worn. Or the creepiest. Or the best or worst or creepiest costume you've seen someone else wear. Something about Halloween costumes. I know - it has absolutely nothing to do with cooking gluten-free at all. I'm just interested in costume stories.
Please - only one comment/entry per person.
The contest ends...ummmmmmmm...............what's today, Thursday? The contest will end Sunday, October 26th, at 12:00 NOON, eastern standard time. Any comments posted after that will not be included, no matter how entertaining they might be. Sorry.
The winner will be announced Monday and will be chosen thusly: I will count up the number of entrants and have my children number slips of paper to correspond with that total. (Educational!) Then I will have my kids fold the slips of numbered paper in half and put them all in a plastic trick-or-treat pumpkin and shake them around a bit. And finally, one child (probably Julia) will reach into the pumpkin and select one slip of paper and hand it to her brother (Alex) and he will display the winning number so I can take a picture and post it and from that number determine who the winner of the cookbook is.
Won't that be fun???? Well, for me, anyway.
Maybe I can work the cats into it somehow, too. I'll think about it.
I'll announce the winner and then that person will need to email me with his/her shipping address so I can send out the book.
Sound good?
If you have questions about the contest, email me - jayne at barefootkitchenwitch dot com.
Okay? Ready? Set?
Let the contest begin!!
Halloween costumes....
The girl is going as a 50's rocker this year. Polka dot poofie skirt, white shirt with a red shrug.
I will never forget, when I was about 8, my mom made my dad a Halloween costume. It was a harem girl outfit. Pink, glittery, head dress with face vale. He wore it and no one knew who he was.

My niece will be a mermaid this year; my nephew with a "man-bat". My sister sews their costumes every year, cutting it close the wire every time. Their first year in costumes, she made them identical lamb costumes. They were adorable, but my nephew absolutely HATED the hoodie that was the head and ears. They are 5 this year, and at least they keep their costumes on the entire time these past few years. They both play "Spiderman" throughout the year, as that was my nephew's costume last year, and will probably continue to change out which one is Spidey until the costume no longer fits them. I love their imaginations!

Well, being British, I don't really have any memorable Halloween costumes from my childhood, I'm not sure why it's not such a big holliday for kids over there.
However, since I've been able to throw my own parties at Halloween, I have been:
1) Bride of Frankenstein (second-hand, slightly torn white net dress, accessorised with liquid latex scars)
2) Angel of Death (with light up sword of doom)
3) A flesh-eating zombie (Again with the liquid latex scars, also I believe I carried around a rubber eye to offer guests as a snack)
I fully intended to be Bettie-Page-as-a-witch last year, but didn't get organised in time. This year we will be outside all night, so I'm thinking "very warmly dressed zombie" might be just the ticket.
Also, I must mention that the all time classic worst chat-up line ever said to me was at a Halloween party, from a friend of a friend dressed as a robot. I had just suggested that he try asking out a girl he really fancied, and he said "No, she's out of my league, but, hey, you're quite attractive." Umm, thanks?

The best/most ridiculous Halloween costumes where always my dad's ideas. My mom would want me and my sister to dress up as black cats or princesses or something girly like that, and my dad (having no boys) would always try and convince us to be something ridiculous/crazy. None of my dad's costumes were very expensive, usually involved cardboard boxes and sheets primarily.
The most ridiculous/cool one of all was when my dad convinced my sister to be a TV on a TV stand -- where there was a table (a large box) with a sheet (to cover my sister's body) and on the table was the TV (another cardboard box I am sure, drawn on to look like a TV) with my sister's head inside the box (to be someone in the TV show). To get the candy...because her arms couldn't stick out...he glued one of those McDonald's plastic bucket-things happy meals used to come in and cut out a hole in the bottom with a bag attached to it underneath. Hilarious to see her have to climb people's stairs to get to the front door...
Other ridiculous costumes included me as a tissue box (think huge Kleenex box) and my sister as a rocket ship (made with a cardboard tube my dad found somewhere) :) I hope you and your kids have a fun Halloween!

I think I win for the weirdest! costume ever. One year, I went as a lamp! My mom tells me that my best friend was supposed to be a dresser to go along with it. I don't know what either of us were thinking, honestly!

A friend of mine dressed heself in a big pink tracksuit, tied a Converse sneaker to her head, and went as Gum Stuck Under A Shoe.
My favourite however, was finding a vintage 50's diner waitress dress / apron - in taupe (complete with an "Ethel" stitched on it). Accessorized by me carrying around a glass drip-style coffee pot filled with rum & diet coke. I had a straw sticking out of the hole at the top of the pot.
Delightful reactions, AND practical :)

My brother was Pacman when he was about 6, made out of posterboard and paint. The year after that, he was the King of Clubs, again with posterboard and paint.
I'm boring, having been a Renaissance wench for 9 of the last 10 years (as long as the bodice still fits, I'm wearing it!). The other year I was a lab rat (lab coat, mouse ears, nose, whiskers, tail).
Hubby went as Kung Fu Elvis 2 years ago, as Pancho Villa last year, complete with his trusty donkey, er, dog, Charlie.

My favorite Halloween costume was when I dressed up as witch when I was a little girl. I just loved that costume even though it wasn't unique.

Well with the economy in the tank right now, we are getting 2 years out of my little guys costume. It is a plush SNAKE Suit we actually bought for $10 at a garage sale a few years back. So $5 per Halloween is something we can justify. Heck at the price of candy per bag $5 sounds like a bargain. My oldest did his part to conserve funds this year and went to the Goodwill on bargain day and did a "totally unique" costume of a character he invented. It was $15 but well worth it as he did it himself! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

My best costume by far was a Cereal Fairy. I spent hours gluing fruit-loops on a pair of fairy wings; stringing fruit-loops and honeycomb on thread for lots of necklaces; sewing together wide strips of colorful cereal boxes for a pleated skirt; and of course making a sparkly bag for my fairy dust (rice krispies). I don't think I'll ever be able to outdo this costume! (and it was delicious to snack on the necklaces!)
