Okay, this was last weekend, actually. On Saturday morning Bill took the kids fishing. It was raining and kind of cold at the time, so they didn't stay as long as they might have otherwise - the kids' hands were getting cold and it just wasn't an enjoyable experience.
However.
Julia caught the one and only fish - a very nice yellow perch. She was very proud of herself.
Frighteningly proud.
And now, you may ask, how did you cook it, Jayne? How did it taste? Did Julia eat the eyes?
Well, since it was just the one fish, we figured we'd just let the kids eat it. Bill started cleaning it while I took pictures of Alex being silly (I'll post those another day). But when Bill began to fillet the perch, he noticed what at first looked like eggs that had burst from their sac. But they looked flat...kind of like red pepper flakes, only without the red. And the thing was, they were all IN the flesh. Not in the cavity like eggs should be.
Upon closer examination (and if you're squeamish, or eating, right now, you may want to read this later, or skip to another blog altogether)....
We discovered that the little circles were actually cyst-like things that contained little wormy creatures. Little wormy creatures that wiggled a bit, if you looked closely.
Well, you get the idea. Pretty icky, huh?
So we tossed the fish.
And then I went online to find out what it was. I believe it's a yellow grub, which lives in the flesh of fish and pretty much leaves them alone otherwise. Once cooked, they're (ick) safe to eat, so if you cook a fish and don't know the yellow grubs are in there, you probably won't see them once the fish is no longer opaque, and it won't harm you.
But still. Actually knowing they're there...watching them wiggle around on a cutting board...um, no thanks.
And that is the most recent fishing story. Charming, isn't it? Just the right tale for the last day of the work week.
That's okay, you don't have to thank me - I can FEEL the love.
I'm sort of surprised Julia didn't insist on eating the yucky things too, after all she did catch them!

Try not to think about it the next time you have fish... we'd all starve to death if we really knew what was in our food. Julia looks so cute... you can tell she's a seasoned fisherman/woman.... she's past that look of fear and moved on to "I caught a fish this big."

Actually, stuff like that ordinarily doesn't bother any of us - we've caught our own fish and eaten it for years and years. I think it just seeing the little things wiggling around on the cutting board that did it. If we'd just gutted and cooked the fish whole, we'd never have noticed.
But hey - it made for interesting pictures!
And yes - she IS quite the fisherwoman now. She isn't squeamish at all, though she is afraid of bees and hornets and yellow jackets, but that's different.
