In keeping with the whole KIND thing I was talking about over on my review/giveaway site earlier this week, I wanted to bring your attention to a couple of worthy causes, in case you have the urge and the funding to lend them a hand.
The first one is Mayan Families, a non-profit organization that aids the indigenous people of Guatemala. The group was brought to my attention when I was contacted back in November to participate in a holiday bazaar in MA. The money to rent a booth was going to be sent the Mayan Families organization. I wasn't able to participate, but I did learn that the woman who organized the event (her name is Melissa) had adopted a child from Guatemala and had wonderful things to say about the Mayan Families program. If you are so inclined, please click on the above link and check them out.

The second is a request from Amy, of Adventures in the Apartment Kitchen. She wrote an email to me shortly after the earthquake in Haiti to mention a mission program her aunt is a part of. The program is Haiti Comfort, and I'll let Amy's email describe their work:
Luckily they were not affected nearly as much as those right in Port-Au-Prince, but like many other families in Haiti, they are under constant duress and any help would be appreciated. They need more than just monetary donations. Children's clothing, toys, care packages and other essentials are also appreciated.
My aunt and two other people take care of about a dozen children who have are suffering with HIV/AIDS. They are continuously providing medical care, food, and a safe and happy place to live in such an poverty-stricken country.
I ask that even though this under a religious organization, their mission of helping others who cannot help themselves is something that goes beyond religious teachings and is something that a few brave and good people decided to do to make the world a better place, even if it's only for a handful of people.
Thanks for bringing your aunt's group to my attention, Amy. I hope this helps!

And the third isn't a non-profit, but it does seem, to me, to be a worthy cause.
I heard about BeadforLife on Etsy. I wish I could remember where I'd seen the mention - it was obviously one of the jewelry sellers, but it was at least a year ago and I didn't make note of it. I did, however, order some beads. I remember seeing other rolled-paper beads like this when I was a kid. I think my grandmother had a necklace made of them. I don't know where she got it. Anyway, beads are made by women in Uganda, and you can either buy the beads or jewelry made of the beads. There are other fundraising projects available as well. If you're looking for some unique, handmade beads and want to do a bit of good as well, you might consider shopping with them.

And that's it for this morning. I know there are zillions of worthy causes out there, and that times are hard for a lot of us as well. I can only say to you, do what works best for you.
I'll be back soon.
