This post is part of an ongoing series about Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA, written (well dictated – I did the typing) and photographed by my 8-year-old son, Alex.
You can see Part 1 here.
We are still in the Savannah area. We are in a huge cage full of pretty birds called Southern Masked Weaver Birds. They’re called weaver birds because they weave up grasses to make their nests. This picture is dark, so it might be a little bit hard to see this bird. Look for a yellowish color and a reddish color on top of the yellow. That is the bird. The bird is under its nest.
Now we’re back into the African Savannah. If you look up in the closest tree, you will see a monkey that is turned around. I never got a good picture of its face. Anyway, the monkey is called a Patas Monkey. The Patas monkey will eat berries, grasses and insects. They eat more, but that’s all I could think of.
We’re still in the African Savannah area. This female lion is not with the zebras, giraffes, gazelles, antelope and Patas monkeys. If she was, she would eat all of them and have a mighty big meal. She is sleeping in her habitat.
This is the male lion, king of the jungle. He is also sleeping. I got a better shot of him than the female because his face was pointing towards me and plus Daddy gave me a boost. The male lion has a mane, that’s how we can tell if it’s a male or a female; females don’t.
Did you know that baby lion cubs have spots? They have spots because it’s good camouflage. Camouflage means that they blend in with their surroundings because they don’t want to get eaten by other predators like crocodiles.
This is a ball. As you can see the lions must have played with a while, and one of them stuck a real big hole in it.
The African Wild Dogs are also not with the zebras and other animals. This one is sleeping, just like the lions. The African Wild Dogs look a lot like hyenas only their ears are huge. Hyenas have smaller ears. This one is also not with the lions, either. African wild dogs will eat meat.
This is an African elephant. The African elephant is the largest elephant and it has larger ears than the Asian elephant. This African elephant might be eating its salad. This elephant is not with the wild dogs, lions, or the zebras and other animals. It is in the elephant forest.
This Asian elephant is near the water. She is also with the African elephant (you can see the African elephant’s butt in the background). You can see that the Asian elephant has a shorter ear than the African elephant. The Asian elephant looked shorter than the African elephant when I was at that zoo. I saw this elephant eating peaches. The zookeeper threw out pieces of peaches and carrots in the water and then the Asian elephant just ate all of ‘em, although the African elephant I think got one peach slice.
This is elephant poo. It looks like there’s also some pee in there. I’m guessing that the Asian elephant did this because the poo is small. The poo is exactly as large as the peach slices that I saw.
That’s it.
