Well, at least it didn’t strike while she was sitting, with Alex, on Mall Santa’s lap.
Or immediately after our “picnic” dinner of burgers and broccoli and really good homemade macaroni and cheese while sitting on a blanket on the floor in front of the tv watching endless episodes of “Billy the Exterminator.” (We are big fans of Billy.)
No, it struck shortly after midnight. I awoke to the miserable sound of Julia wailing my name.
“MOMMY! MOMMY! I THREW UP ON MY BED!”
Glad tidings of great joy.
She cried, I tried not to grimace as I gathered up all her bedding into a big, smelly, high thread count cotton bundle.
We headed downstairs, where I dumped all the sheets, the pillow, and the comforter into the washing machine. I cleaned off Julia’s face and hair, and we settled in for the night in the basement/sickroom. I gave Julia a big plastic bin for emergencies, and we dozed – she on the big comfy chair and me on the couch – to the soothing sound of Mike Rowe and a bunch of “Dirty Jobs” reruns.
Julia made good use of the bin – and I mean that sincerely. She grabbed it quickly every time and I didn’t have to scrub the basement carpet or the arm of the chair or anything like that.
Sometimes I miss babyhood or toddlerhood, but I am thankful for THIS age when she knows to grab the bin BEFORE her stomach makes its next move.
And that’s how the rest of early today went. A little unpleasant activity, followed by flush, and rinse, and clean. Some tv, or a dvd…some dozing…more excitement, flush, rinse, repeat.
This morning she has had a couple of sips of water and a tiny bite of toast.
So far, the toast has stayed put.
In a little while, Alex will go to school and Julia will have a nice, warm, bath.
I’ve got smelly laundry to do.
I’m hoping to get a nap in at some point.
Fa la la la la, la la la laaaaaa.
P.S. While I was typing this I started remembering another fun and exciting episode of children with stomach issues. So I found the links, in case you need a good (albeit really icky) laugh today.
The first one’s the best. Well, now that’s over.

(I know. Other blogs link to pictures or end-of-the-year recaps or cool stuff like that. This is what I do, apparently.)
Ah, yes, the joys of motherhood. I hope Julia is feeling much better today. I have to agree, it's much easier having sick kids when they're out of baby/toddlerhood. At least they can tell you what hurts/feels bad. I hope you both get some rest today.

OMG, Jayne, I feel awful but I was laughing so hard at each of these posts. No offense to Bill but why is it always the mom that takes care of that least-desirable of tasks?
It makes me thankful that all I have to clean up after are dogs and that doesn't entail linens or clothing. Although I don't think I'll ever fully get past the smell. Just the thought is enough to almost make me gag.
I hope Julia is feeling tons better and soon!

Oh I remember those days, and I don't miss them. The boy child (whose far from a child at 25) came in the other night after a night out with friends, was home 30 minutes and started 'frowin-up'. Luckily at his age I don't have to do anything but tease him in the morning.
