On the second day of our little vacation, we got up early, I cooked breakfast for everyone, and then Bill and the kids headed to Wildcat. The kids were signed up for all-day lessons, and Bill was also scheduled for a private 2-hour lesson that afternoon.
Me?
I stayed at the condo and relaxed.
I admit, it felt weird.
No one to feed or pay attention to.
Just me.
And books.
And a comfortable couch.
I read.
I ate some peanutbutter and toast.
While I continued to read.
I ate some lunch and watched a bit of “To Kill a Mockingbird” on AMC.
I read more and dozed off for an hour or so.
I woke up and read some more.
Yes, it was an exhausting day.
But I stuck it out.
I’m no quitter.
Now, in case you’re wondering what I read, I’ll give you the little list. But it’s just that – a list. Not a review, not a critique, not a plot summary. Just a list.
First – Port Mortuary, by Patricia Cornwell. I’ve been waiting and waiting to read this, knowing it would be one of my vacation books. And, because I’m weird, I re-read the entire Kay Scarpetta series in the weeks leading up to our trip, just so I could start the most recent one on the heels of the previous book. I reread this series probably once a year. Anyway, I started this in the lodge at Bretton Woods on Tuesday and finished it at some point on the couch in the condo on Wednesday. And I already know I’ll have to read it again soon. The first time was – despite my best efforts – a mad, joyful dash through the pages. I tried to read slowly, to savor the words, the dialogue, the plots. But…I was like a starving woman at an all-you-can-eat buffet. I had very little self-control.
Second – Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman. Just because. I’d never read it. I remember watching the movie on TV years ago, and so as I was browsing the shelves at Barnes & Noble on Monday, this was on that jumped off the shelf and into my hands. Okay, not really. But sometimes they seem to, don’t they? I read it all that day – most of it before Bill and the kids got back from skiing, and the last of it later that evening after we got back from dinner. Yes, we did to OUT to eat one night. I’ll tell you about that in another post.
Third – True Grit, by Charles Portis. I have to thank my friend, Sheila, for this one. She wrote a review of the recent Coen Brothers film version of the book, and I realized that, though I’d seen the John Wayne movie years ago, I never knew there was a book that came first. So I had to read the book. And I did. Read it straight through in a couple of hours. Couldn’t put it down. The kids went to bed. Bill went to bed. I stayed on the recliner, curled up under a blanket, and read straight through. Great fun.
And fourth – U is for Undertow, by Sue Grafton. Another favorite series, though I don’t go through and reread these so much any more. But whenever the newest edition of her alphabet series comes out, I have to read it. I got her last one when it came out in hardcover, but this time around, for whatever reason, I put off buying it until now. And guess what, I haven’t finished this one yet.
So, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve still got some vacationing to do.
