Squash Harvest

We were kind of stunned.  We didn’t know we had this many – some we just discovered today, including one HUGE butternut that grew quietly behind some buckets of basil.  We were so obsessed with the galeux we never even noticed it.

Bill found another butternut covered in overgrown lawn.

We forced the kids to pose with the squash harvest.

This was the best of the three pictures.  You can see Alex just wanting it to be over soon.

After the jolly photo shoot, Bill had the kids divide the squash (butternut in one group, butternut/futsu hybrids in the other) and then count them. 

I love looking at these.  All fourteen of ‘em.

And these:

Twenty-three.

So – today, 37 squash.

And we’re not done.

We’ve got at least four or five from this plant.  This is the one dangling from the lilac.  It’s still above the ground, and getting bigger every day.

And there’s the huge one against the fence, plus another one Bill saw while he was looking for the matured butternuts and hybrids.

These…well, who knows how they’ll turn out.  At the moment, they look like black futsu, but the way our yard is, who knows!

Wow. Wow - wow - wow.
I thought I was overrun with cucumbers (and then something attacked them) and the vines all died. I think next year, I have to grow something I like more... like butternut squash! What an impressive yield!!

Are the butternut/futsu hybrids something that just occurred this year or did you save seeds from previous years?

The butternut/futsu plants are rogues that just crept out from the compost areas. They just started showing up a year or two ago and we never know what theyll look like.
